Dentist have a vital role in taking care of a patient’s oral care and every day there are patients who visit a dentist or other dental professional without checking their credentials which includes graduating from an accredited dental school and obtaining a state license which requires background checks and more testing. This can be a huge mistake as seen through this article http://www.woai.com/content/health/story/Patients-worry-about-treatment-from-shady-dentist/L6cuNRwFdUiib3JtH25uXg.cspx about an unlicensed dentist working in San Antonio who ran a dental office that seem to do shady jobs. The dentist ordered dental equipment from Mexico for a patient’s children and was arrested for operating without a license.

The problem here is that there are many dental care professionals that are working without proper licensing or certification. It is unimaginable how these individuals can start a dental office and work on patients without these credentials but there are many cases like the one above. Patients deserve to have the best dental service from a licensed professional and parents need to know that the extremely delicate work on their children’s teeth and oral care is done by a professional who knows what they are doing. Putting oral care in the hands of an unlicensed dentist can have long term affects if the person does not really have the knowledge or experience. This is why it is important for patients to at least check to see if their dentist is listed as a licensed dentist in their state.

To check if a dentist is licensed to work in a state, a patient can visit the state dental board which often provides a search feature. The Dental Board of Illinois has an easy search function for finding a dentist by last name which shows results that includes license status and any disciplinary actions that have been taken against the dentist. The disciplinary action status is important because patients can check to see if a licensed dentist has had anything against them so the patients can decide if the action is important enough for them to find another dentist. Check out the Illinois State Dental Board dentist search at https://www.idfpr.com/DPR/licenselookup/default.asp.

It only takes a couple of minutes to check the credentials for a dentist who is responsible for oral care and can cause serious and lasting damage if done incorrectly.
